URGENT PUBLISHING
Where you come from determines how you interpret language. Belonging to the same culture means that we are able to communicate, because we share broadly the same conceptual map and thus make sense of, or interpret the world and language in roughly similar ways.
We give meaning to the concepts in our minds and communicate this through language. Meaning depends on the relationship between things in the world. The general term we use for words, sounds, or images, which carry meaning, is signs.

How would you feel if your culture finds a way to deal with emotions and suffering through beautiful and expressive signs, but the government doesn’t support this way of living?

This interactive publication explores the meaning of the signs from a part of the Jamaican culture, through a theatre script. English is a commonly shared language within the Jamaican culture. Yet, certain linguistic expressions in this script are linked to a different conceptual map than ours, and therefore entail another meaning. Travel between these different linguistic layers and sift through the different cultural interpretations of the text.
